Overview
The MedikBio® Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) Assay Kit provides a convenient, sensitive, and accurate colorimetric method for the quantitative determination of SOD enzyme activity in biological samples. SOD enzymes catalyze the dismutation of superoxide (O₂⁻) into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, serving as a critical antioxidant defense in all cells exposed to oxidative stress. Aberrant SOD activity has been linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), perinatal lethality, neural disorders, and cancer. This kit is an essential tool for researchers studying oxidative stress, antioxidant defense, and related pathologies.
Assay Principle
Superoxide (O₂⁻) is generated by xanthine oxidase (XO)-catalyzed reaction. The O₂⁻ reacts with WST-1 dye to form a colored product. SOD in the sample scavenges O₂⁻, reducing the amount available for the chromogenic reaction. The decrease in color intensity (OD₄₄₀ₙₘ) is directly proportional to SOD activity. This method is highly specific and avoids interferences common in other SOD assays.
